Imagine being suspended in water, encircled by ephemeral objects
that glint, gleem , shift shadows, reveal images and illuminate
colors. Such is the highly exceptional nature of La Chauviniere’s
translucent sculpture.
The works of artist La Chauviniere-Riant
defy categorization or easy description…they must be seen,
experienced. Mme. La Chauviniere-Riant uses an industrial resin
(torolythe) to suspend found objects and luminous pieces creating
evocative, engaging sculpture.
Each of her pieces is original by virtue of the
materials and components…more importantly, by events and injustices
that inspire her creations. Her subject matters are compelling,
moving, intellectually demanding and for some, disquieting. As with
all important art, her work never leaves a viewer unaffected.
The only known artist to be working with torolythe,
La Chauvinere-Riant has fused several art forms to create pieces
that are unique and uniquely significative. The encasing resin,
atypically, is not a hard and impersonal surface but hand sanded,
rubbed by the artist to attain a clear glow that compels contact.
The pieces are not cold and distant as one would expect but as warm
as the fingertips of the admirer.
La Chauviniere-Riant’s early artistic development
in Tunisia is evident from her love of luminosity and the use of
translucency to convey innermost, spiritual and spirited sensibilities.
Her life time has been spent in worldly circumstances and in sometimes
difficult or besieged locations. Her empathy for global grievances
and exploitations, as exquisitely experienced by individuals, is
subliminally evident in each piece. Seemingly disparate elements
almost mystically combine to affect each viewer, personally, from
within.
Impressionistic, inspired images that are uniquely expressed is
the essence of La Chauviniere-Riant’s art.
